Sammy’s Stomach of Steel

Like many dogs, Sammy Sanchez gets car sick every time we take a road trip. This past weekend, when we drove down to visit my sister and brother-in-law in Washington, D.C., it was no different.

There are FDA-approved medications that can help dogs with car sickness, but I prefer not to use drugs. We’ve traveled enough with Sammy to know how to prepare for this gastric distress. This is what I pack:

  • Two small hand towels – Sammy sits on the towel, on my lap
  • A roll of paper towels – I use them to catch the vomit
  • A Ziplock bag containing damp paper towels – for the clean-up
  • A plastic bag – to hold the trash

On the ride down, Sammy threw up three times. The first two attacks were about 50 minutes into our trip. Luckily, I caught everything in the paper towels. The third one happened right after we gave the dogs some water at the rest stop in Maryland. Sammy lapped up a lot of water and a few minutes later it all came up as soon as we were back on the highway.

Then, on Saturday night, we found one of the baby’s chewed-up pacifiers under the dining table. Could Sammy have eaten off the plastic? We searched for the pieces but didn’t imagine that Sammy ate them. After all, he never did anything like that before.

Sammy Sanchez ate the pacifier.

But dogs can do some surprising things, as we discovered the next morning. Sammy threw up again — three times — and each new batch of barf contained a piece of the chewed-up plastic nipple!

A fourth vomit session on the way home to Brooklyn revealed a fourth piece. Poor Sammy!

Thankfully he has a pretty strong stomach and was doing just fine by the time we got home.
